Fort Lauderdale History
The area that would become Fort Lauderdale had been inhabited by the Tequesta Indians for hundreds of years, although the first explorers to land here arrived in the 1600s from Spain. While the region has centuries of history, it didn’t get its present name until the 1800s, and was incorporated in 1911. It was named after a Second Seminole War fortification, which itself was named after Major William Lauderdale.
