Long Island History
Long Island was first settled hundreds of years ago by English Puritans and Dutch explorers. It served host to the largest battle of the Revolutionary War—the Battle of Long Island—but didn’t begin to take its modern form until the 19th century, when the rural, agricultural lifestyle was slowly replaced by trolleys, streetcars, and railways. Long Island was home to the well-known Roosevelt and Vanderbilt families, as well as famous businessman and philanthropist Charles Pratt.

Long Island Geography
Long Island juts out from the New York Harbor and is surrounded by Long Island Sound, the Atlantic Ocean, and Block Island Sound. The central and eastern parts of the island include the suburban Nassau and Suffolk Counties. The economy has long benefited from its proximity to New York City, with convenient access provided by the Long Island Rail Road (LIRR).
