New Jersey History
New Jersey was first settled by Europeans in the 1620s, although the first people to inhabit the area were the Lenape Indians. The state played a major role during the Revolutionary War, and it harbored a large number of both Loyalists and Patriots. When the war was over, New Jersey was the third state to ratify the United States Constitution, doing so on December 18, 1787.
